What is Xylometazoline 0.1%-10ml used for?
Xylometazoline 0.1%-10ml is a topical nasal decongestant used to temporarily relieve congestion in the blocked nose caused by the common cold, flu, and nasal allergies such as hay fever (allergic rhinitis).
Xylometazoline, available as nasal drops, belongs to a group of drugs called nasal decongestants. Xylometazoline works by narrowing the blood vessels in the lining of the nose and sinuses, which decreases the blood flow in the nose. This reduces swelling and clears the blocked and stuffy nose, thereby allowing you to breathe easily.
Xylometazoline may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
What is the recommended dosage of Xylometazoline?
The dosage of Xylometazoline prescribed to each patient will vary. Always follow your physician’s instructions and/or the directions on the prescription drug label.
Xylometazoline nasal drops should be used in the nose only and it should not be taken by mouth.
To apply the Xylometazoline nasal drops, tilt your head back and insert 2 or 3 drops in each nostril. It is not recommended to use the drops for more than 3 days in a row. Longer use of these drops can lead to rebound congestion. Inform your doctor if your problem persists even after 3 days of using the Xylometazoline nasal drops.
What if you miss a dose of Xylometazoline?
If your physician has instructed or directed you to use Xylometazoline medication on a regular schedule and you have missed a dose of this medicine, use it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the doses to catch up for the missed dose.
What if you overdose on Xylometazoline?
Any medication used in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose of Xylometazoline, seek medical attention immediately. Overdose symptoms of Xylometazoline nasal drops may include dizziness, drowsiness, slow heartbeat, and sweating.

Avoid taking monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors for the last 14 days before treatment with Xylometazoline nasal drops. MAO inhibitors include linezolid, isocarboxazid, methylene blue, phenelzine, tranylcypromine, moclobemide, procarbazine, rasagiline, and selegiline.
Following are the other types of medicines that may interact with Xylometazoline: high blood pressure medications, tricyclic antidepressants, phenothiazines, appetite suppressants, and other decongestants.
Usually, drug interactions occur when it is used with another drug or with food. Before you use a medication for a particular ailment, you should inform the health expert about the intake of any other medications including non-prescription medications (over-the-counter products) and dietary supplements like vitamins, minerals, and herbal, which may increase the effect of Xylometazoline, so that the doctor can warn you of any possible drug interactions.
